5 Zero Waste Summer Essentials

Writer's picture: Samantha OffredoSamantha Offredo

A study conducted by the World Economic Forum discovered that every minute that goes by one garbage truck full of plastic is getting thrown into our oceans. This number is further increased during the summer months as people begin to come outside more and spend time on our beaches.

This impact not only shows on land but also is having a disturbing impact on marine life as this plastic pollution is leading to the ingestion, suffocation, and death of hundreds of marine life species.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way. There are dozens of zero-waste swaps that you are able to make to actively combat this ever growing issue and also make your life overall cleaner. While dozens of swaps may sound intimidating, how about we start off small and cover five simple swaps you can make in your daily life in order to make both your life and marine life better.

Local Opportunities

Make sure to check out what's happening around you and optimize your summer by checking out some of the local events in your area. Summer is prime time for farmers markets which not only is a great way to pick up fresh produce but also helps you reduce your carbon footprint. You can even bring your own reusable bags and containers to truly make this summer a zero waste one.

Reusable Water Bottle

While this swap may seem obvious and repetitive, it is efficient. By simply swapping out single use water bottles with an adorable reusable one, you are saving about 1,460 single use bottles per year. Not only is that incredible on its own, I found that after switching to a reusable bottle I was more inclined to drink more water and stay hydrated in the humid months.

Zero-Waste Sunscreen

Most conventional sunscreens are full of toxic chemicals that are generally more harmful to you than sun exposure itself. Finding the correct sunscreen that not only protects yourself but also the environment is key for a good summer. Look for sunscreens that are sustainably packaged and not full of damaging ingredients. Not only do these products affect your skin but they also have a huge effect on the environment and coral reefs.

Sustainable Snacks

Snacks are essential for a successful summer day. However, usually that looks like a lot of plastic waste and empty baggies by the end of the day. Instead, consider packing some snacks in eco-friendly containers or reusable silicone bags.

Reusable Straws

It’s 2021 and you’re still using a single use plastic straw?! Come on buddy! Reusable straws come in a great variety including, glass straws, bamboo straws, and stainless steel straws! Personally I love the stainless steel option as it keeps your drink cold the whole time!
